The One Thing Everyone Needs (and Loves): Pajamas
Full disclosure: I’m drafting this blog post in my Christmas pajamas.
No, I have not packed them away yet despite the January 14 date of this writing. They will remain in the rotation until the Valentine’s pajamas are acceptable to wear in a couple weeks.
Adulthood tricked me
I grew up watching ads and reading magazine articles that convinced me I’d need clothes that could carry me from a 9-5 work day straight to drinks with friends on the way home.
And while I can think back to a few times in my mid-20s when that may have been the case, it turns out that the real joy is climbing into bed or onto the couch in a pair of ridiculously soft pajamas, snack in hand, favorite show or audiobook queued up, and zero plans to leave the house.
Maybe you’re a night owl like me who hasn’t conquered the whole “laptop shuts at work and doesn’t reopen at home” commitment (I promise I’m working on it!). Late-night grading becomes more palatable with comfy pajamas, blanket on my lap, mug of tea nearby, and Spotify playing in the background.
Pajamas are the unsung heroes of home happiness. They don’t get the credit they deserve, but they hold quiet power: they turn “I can’t do one more thing today” into “Okay, maybe I’ll survive after all.” And if you’ve ever felt your whole nervous system exhale the second you swap jeans for PJs, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
I’ve been noticing lately how small, intentional comforts carry big weight in my life. Whether it’s showing up for a friend or lighting a candle at the end of the day, the little things add up.
And pajamas? They might just be the ultimate little thing. They’re practical, but they also feel like a form of care. Buying yourself a pair is self-kindness; gifting someone else pajamas is almost like saying, I want you to be rested, cozy, and cared for.
The Sleep Foundation experts tell us that setting the tone for rest is just as important as the sleep itself. “Sleep hygiene” encompasses our sleep environment and our behavior. They note that, “Good sleep hygiene includes setting a strict sleep schedule, following a bedtime routine, forming healthy habits, and optimizing your bedroom for sleep.” Turns out that pajamas can help cue our bodies that it’s time for rest. We learn to recognize comfort and routine, making it easier to unwind and truly rest. Okay, I think I’m feeling more convicted about keeping that laptop shut and actually cueing myself to rest when I put on those pajamas.
So here’s the question: If pajamas are something we all love and need, why not make them thoughtful?
I’ve definitely reached the point of adulthood where I love opening the gifts I used to dread as a kid: slippers, clothes and pajamas—especially nicer ones than I would typically buy for myself.
But we’ve all earned an upgrade. It’s time to abandon the mismatched tees and stretched-out leggings or sweats and opt for something a bit more deserving. Pajamas that make us feel cared for, not like we’re wearing leftovers from the laundry pile.
That’s part of what we’re building with HeyDay—a reminder that the everyday things matter, and when you choose them with care, they become much more than things.
